At the end of July 2000, I completed my first posting for Shell International Exploration and Production after spending 4 1/2 years as a production & maintenance engineer in Germany. I have now been posted to Thailand for four years as Production Technologist, responsible for optimising sub-surface oil production. I am based in the north of Thailand, in Phitsanulok, which is ideally placed to enable travel about Thailand. I have, so far, thoroughly enjoyed my time here and can recommend Thailand to all! If you are over, don't forget to give me a shout! (Andrew_Marron@yahoo.co.uk)Ramin Mellegard KC'79-'82 (20/6/01)
I'm a writer/producer with Bloomberg TV in Tokyo. Parents and the rest of my family are still in England. Still as naughty as I ever was running around Guilford House, throwing stink bombs into 6th form rooms, and cooking up a storm in the little kitchen which used to be by the TV room. If anyone from my year would like to get in touch please do so at my hotmail address. I was in the same year as Stuart Rae, David Oates, Dave Sargeant, Egghead, Mole, Ginger Nut, and the rest of the lads and lasses. Long live KC! Anyone in Tokyo, get hold of me at Bloomberg TV. We stepped
onto flight CX255 from Heathrow late on the night of Tuesday, 24th May with no
little trepidation tempered by anticipation. We
were on an 11-hour journey to Hong Kong to fulfil diverse purposes. Firstly, we were to meet and establish links with
both Hong Kong parents of current pupils and Old Cantuburians, and we were also to
represent Kent College at an Educational Fair at the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre, although
we were not looking to recruit in numbers.
Prior to the trip, successful contact had been made via the OC Website with OCs based in Hong Kong, a group of whom had been garnered by Giles Surman (Head Boy 1985) and had organised a dinner in our honour. After a busy day meeting local educational agents we took a taxi to the Lippo Tower One to meet Giles, now a prominent Hong Kong barrister. He, in turn, took us in the MTR (the Hong Kong underground) to a typical Cantonese Restaurant in Kowloon. Giles did not study A level Geography; perhaps this explains the mildly interesting route we took, via Pratt Lane and a third floor massage parlour, to the Spring Deer Restaurant. Fortunately his contemporary OCs Simon Chan, Charles Chan, Danny Hui and Alan Mok had less difficulty. We spent a wonderful evening hearing tales of the 1980s in Milton and Guilford as some of this group of OCs met together for the first time since leaving KC. It was most gratifying to hear how much they had valued the input of their former teachers and the whole school community. A Hong Kong branch of OCs with Charles Chan acting as the local secretary will now be established. This evening will be repeated and I envisage many more HKOCs will join them.
We were so fortunate that we had a trump card at the Educational Fair; the OCs plus half a dozen current parents of KC pupils (even one whose daughter doesnt start school until September) who were prepared to spend 3-4 hours or more helping us. They did such a good job extolling the virtues of KC that at one stage the organisers warned us that too many parents were registering their children for the school! What this meant was that I could be very much more selective in offering places to pupils. Some of the OCs mentioned above, plus Cina and Clement Tong (KC 1994-1999), Winnie Chau (KC 1999) and Jamie Laws (KC 1997-1999) mother visited us and helped us on our stall, despite their busy schedules and journeys of up to 1½ hours. Jean and I were most grateful and very proud of them all.
Two days later we hosted a reception for current parents of pupils and OCs to which we also invited the parents of the small number of talented pupils to whom we had offered places. This was highly successful, friendships were formed, links were established and coincidences uncovered all thanks to KC.
Jean and I found odd gaps in our schedule which we used to travel around to discover more about this fascinating place. We enjoyed the juxtaposition of old and new, rich and poor, east and west.
I do hope that the new HKOC society will flourish, that we shall create a HK Friends Association and that Jean and I will have the opportunity and pleasure visiting Hong Kong again in the near future.

KC v OCs30 March 2001
Austin Whiting assembled a collection of Old Canterburians from a vintage spanning the last 20 years. The school side made a tentative start, seeming happy to sit back and let the OCs run at them. During this period of play Gus Oates scored from a well-worked short corner, and Abi Jain crashed a penalty stroke against the post. At this point the school moved forward with more purpose and were rewarded with a goal from Ross Henderson. A slick move saw Jess Dowsing enable the school to take the lead, but on the stroke of half time a sprightly Jimmy Laslett scored from a narrow angle. The second half saw the school press forward and playing some delightful hockey took the lead through Chris Gadilhe. From this point onwards both sides created several chances to increase the goal tally. The OCs did put the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for honesty and the school ran out winners 3-2. An enoyable game, the first time the fixture had been played for three years.

Dennis Bear KC'42-'51 (21/3/01)
Dennis has been the OCC AROPS representative for many years and feels that he should pass this role on now. I have asked him to put together a few notes about AROPS and we are hoping that we can find a volunteer who is willing to represent OCC at AROPS in the future. Any costs incurred will be reimbursed by the club.
The Association of Representatives of Old Pupils Societies (A.R.O.P.S)
The Association was started in December 1971 with the objectives of to provide a forum for the exchange of views and experiences of Old Boys Societies. In 1978 the title was changed to encompass girls and co-ed schools and more recently societies from preparatory schools have joined. Today there are more than 260 schools are represented. A.R.O.P.S. works closely with the Independent Schools Council. It is a non-political body and has invited speakers from both sides of the House of Commons but its interests have always been opposed to any political threat to Independent Education.
Members are nominated by their Societies but participate at meetings as individuals. They form the effective line of communication between their Old Pupils Committee and through them their Society and school. Therefore enthusiasm for the O.C.C. must be real for our representative. I originally became the O.C.C. representative in 1972, so we were early members, the late John Ching took over for some years and I resumed the role when he retired to Portugal.
For the representatives there are two meetings a year, the Annual Conference and the A.G.M., plus another five for members of the committee. The Annual Conference is held in May and occupies a full Saturday with the Annual Dinner in the evening. The venue varies each year being in different schools around the country. Last year it was held at Bristol Grammer School this year it is at Wycombe Abbey School, next year at Hurstpierpoint College. The A.G.M. is an evening meeting held in November at a school in London. This is followed by a buffet. The committee is an informal one for which volunteers are sought for election at the A.G.M.
The Conference format is mainly one of four sessions, two before lunch and two after, being addressed by specialist speakers who have covered a wide range of relevant topics over the years. There is also an open question and answer session. A full report is issued on the proceedings after the Conference. One of the main advantages is the opportunities to talk with other representatives on common subjects and to enjoy one anothers company. In recent years the attendance has ranged from 80 to 100 delegates. For those delegates bringing their spouses, who are not attending the Conference, there is an alternative programme arranged during the day that usually consists of visiting local places of interest. For comfort I normally stay at a convenient hotel, for which special rates have usually been negotiated, on the Friday night before the Conference and the Saturday night after the Annual Dinner.
As well as the reports of the Conference and A.G.M. there are papers on a number of relevant subjects i.e. Life Membership, legal responsibilities of committee members, results of surveys etc. all of which are sent to the representatives for circulation as necessary.

What a surprise to see this link! After leaving KC in 87, I went to Sheffield for my degrees till 93. Went back to Hong Kong to join the Government Flying Service (aka RHKAAF). Came back to Redhill, near Gatwick for my flying training in 97. I actually came back for speech day in 98 and I was shocked to find out that many teachers still remember the embarrassing things that I'd done. I am currently working/on-loan to a helicopter company in Aberdeen, Scotland. I am trying to get in touch with Mr Geoff Connolly. Geoff was my flying instructor when I was in Redhill. He and his son, Alastair (I hope I've got that one right) are also ex-pupils of KC. Anyone know them please relay message for me. (bouncer@hongkong.com)Class of 1990 unofficial reunion (29/05/01)
Right then. There comes a time in everyone's life where you find yourself approaching 30 (or reach it), have a mortgage, regular job, responsibilities dammit even children. Your life echoes the sitcoms your parents used to watch. So remember the episode where the lead characters go back to a school reunion and...blah...blah. Well this is your opportunity. Several factors have conspired in the last couple of weeks to throw up fresh avenues of email communication with hitherto thought dead, shady characters, from our collective pasts. The logical gathering of said characters gained momentum to the stage where there is now a semi-official yet very informal reunion taking place for KC's "class of 90" (crass Americanism I know). It will take place at: RICHMOND PARK
There is a load of grass between the car park and Isabella plantation marked on the A-Z. It's lies between Robin Hood gate and Ladderstile entrance off A308 (in turn off the A3, off M25)
on: SATURDAY 9th JUNE
at: erm...11.30 am onwards? Picnic vibe with cheeky bottles of Chardonnay thus providing social lubricant but remaining child friendly. If raining large house available near by.
Please RSVP and let me know if you have children. Feel free to forward this to everyone possible - they may not be as bad as you remember! See you then hopefully the more the merrier etc. etc.

The club has been informed of the tragic death of Gabriella on the 28th April 2001. "Grabriella was 23 years old and was a lively and popular girl at Kent College in the late 90's" Edward Halse said "Gabriella left school in 6.1 and travelled the world extensively. She later returned to education and completed her A levels, after which she entered the hotel management business. Gabriella had recently returned from Europe where she had been working and doing well. She leaves her parents and her sister, Charlotte also an OC. Her funeral was held on 4th May and many of her friends from Kent College were there, including the Headmaster. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

Great to have discovered a medium to communicate with friends you have shared a significant past with. So much has happened since I left KC, it's quite frightening to recount. I haven't been the best when it comes to keeping in touch, although Giles Surman and Georgie Abraham have remained constant "brothers in arms". Over the years I have encountered Mike Kagwa and "K" Akosa. I have often wondered how Ken Chow,Ian Sebire,Abhi Jain,Ptom Dean and all the guys in HK and Milton House who were there during my time are doing.I returned to Accra, Ghana in 1993 and continue to work for British Aerospace Defence Systems,Airsys ATM and Millicom Ghana in the communication industry. I have managed to maintain most of my old hobbies (bar the unproductive) while taking on several new additions, notable amongst these is my recent obsession with cashew cultivation

What a treat!I had a dream about VH and KC (VH 1967-71/KC 71-76) and decided at the end of the day to see if there is anyone out there who remembers this rather theatrical youth who was told that he would never amount to anything in the Showbusiness arena.
Well, not that one wishes to prove anyone wrong but having done most things from treading the boards to teaching and even for a mad moment became an Air Steward for too long - yes Marc is now an agent looking after the careers of actors and performers having discovered that he could no longer remember lines and rather thought that he did not wish to incommode the poor British Public with cursory performance.
Although the Mother still lives in Whitstable, Marc is now in Brighton and doing 'what it says on the tin!' With four actors in the west end and on UK tours, several BBC productions under his belt, three major feature films (one now in post production), Marc found his niche at last.
Having looked through the list of people who have left messages; I noticed especially Canon Paul Inge who was his first room prefect who did not like references to 'hinges on doors'!
Many memories of VH and KC come back - Mr Mellor a real Headmaster! Marc House Captain of Nevile (never won a thing!)! The Bamboos, hidden places, scrumpy, being very naughty and a performace of ACHMED THE WOODSELLER with Peter Blunt on Piano - God that does take him back!
KC - Mr P Chalcraft of Woodwork fame/Lower School and too good at the slipper, falling alseep in Music with ?, being naughty in the Piano rooms, Mr Wright who ran the film society (God Rest!), the spanish couple in the canteen - Speech days when the food did not have to be paid for - my mother without a hat and Mr David Norfolk asking how she was and Mum replying 'I'm bleeding fed up!'
And of course the funniest man at KC Mr Peter Sweet, a teacher that helped me pass my only O Level Geography (except TD) for making it all so much fun. And so many more... another time. Any one heard of Alex Coombes (same time as me went to Uni of Kent in Media and Drama?) Shared a room with me in School house he was a true friend.
I would love to hear from anyone from those days - certainly over lunch, dinner or a drink!

No takers for over 50's hockey - as yet. I still play once every two years! Looking back, I'm grateful to KC for a number of reasons, but I suppose the main one is hockey. At KC, my hockey was limited to the Under 14's in 1958. After that my game went into almost terminal decline. However, after leaving KC in 1961 I went on to play for my local team - Sanderstead - until 1979. One of our players was Andrew Foot, ex Beckenham, Kent and Oxford Uni, whom I remember played for Kent against Yorkshire at KC, on that lovely grass pitch, in about 1959. I had the chance to play for a Hockey Association side (organised by Andrew) against KC in the late 1960's, but the game was cancelled for some reason. So I never played on that hallowed turf. Actually I did. One summer's evening, whilst at KC, I and some chums were playing football and I remember John Cadman, our old hockey master, coming along and joining in. It's strange the little insignificant things one still remembers so many years later. I'm glad to see at least two of my contempories - Peter Magill and Gerald Eva - are alive and well. I also recollect Peter Gatehouse. Of course he was a bit older and about two foot taller. I remember he used to hurl the discus a fair old way. And yes, I can confirm he was a swine - at least to younger boys. Sorry to hear of the death of Mr Slater. We used to know him as Mr Slaughter - as Christopher Gibbs would testify. Who remembers Gibbo? I'm still working. In fact I'm building up another business called Outside The Box (outsidethebox.uk.com). We help owner managers to build better businesses, through innovation, marketing etc. It's great fun and a real challenge. Although my folks still live in East Kent I haven't been back at all, must go. Great to see the names on this site, (some of whom I ought to remember but don't). There was a time when there were 4 Chapmans at KC at the same time, Andy, Jon, Tim and Rupert. All are now in good order and most of them proliferating. Bumped into Tony Bolton (70s) a few years back in Kensington, bought a car off Richard Baker (also 70s). Fond memories of Guilford House under Wang (Alan Charlesworth). Very sad to hear of the passing of Pippin and Mr Burkinshaw, both who tried so hard to educate me. I'm married to Nancy now, passionate about Sailing and working in I.T. Anyone know where Simon Bottle is? (tim@iluka.co.uk)Wendy Dron KC'85-'92 (2/1/01)
With a career change on the horizon I thought it was about time I said hello once again to anyone who was at KC from 85 to 92. I've been working as a staff translator for the last 3 1/2 years and will be leaving at the end of this month for a new challenge as a freelance translator. I'm living with my partner in Eastleigh (Hants) at the moment and I'd love to hear from anyone else who was at KC over those years. (Wendy@reesnet.freeuk.com)Rachel Thomas KC'92-'96 (1/1/01)
