OCC-Online.org.uk (31/10/07)

I've been having some technical difficulties with updating this site following various hardware changes - I believe all is back to normal now - as ever the Canterburians Online site is the place to go to get recent information and to post your news items! Thanks Duncan.

Cyrus Bharucha KC'53-'59 (20/11/06)

I now live in California where I am semi retired from being a television producer/director. I worked for many years in London for the BBC and visited KC on several occasions mainly to meet Mr. Charlesworth. I was sad to see that Keith Haynes died. I knew his father Sid Haynes and my cousins went to Queens Taunton to his school as they were not bright enough to get into KC!!
I have strong feeling for my old school and if there are people in the IC that recall me I would love to correspond with them. I met Peter Archer -2 years junior to me- thru the guest book. We met up in Bristol after 46 years!!
God bless KC! cbharucha@san.rr.com

2006 Winter Reunion - best attendance for 20 years!!

There were over 110 OCs at Kent College last weekend for the Reunion, the best turn out since the Club's Centenary Dinner. The weekend will be reported in full in the new format Newsletter - you should see the next edition before Christmas! During the Remembrance Service in the Chapel on Sunday Audrey Charlesworth unveiled a plaque dedicated to the memory of Alan Charlesworth for his services to the School and Club for over 40 years.

Richard Brown KC'61-'68

I wondered if anyone has contact details for Timothy Clark (KC 1961-1968) a friend of mine who I believe worked for Gulf Air in Bahrain for sometime. Richard Brown

Bill Urry KC'62-'71

I would be particularly grateful if you would convey my appreciation to Duncan Perkins, whose arrival when I was in the Remove I well remember, who
struggled with a less than natural French linguist to the point of getting me through O Level against considerable odds, and who also led the KC choir
in Canterbury Cathedral on the sad occasion of my Father's funeral in 1981. He was always destined to be a pillar of KC in the same tradition as Gerald
Colson, Douglas White, or APLS Slater, and I am sure he will be remembered for many years with huge affection by generations of OCs.

Lost!

Our recent mail out showed that the addresses we were holding for a number of Old Canterburians are no longer correct. If any OC has knowledge of the current address/contact number/e mail of the following we would be very grateful if you could notify Marisa Parducci at the school on parducci@kc-canterbury.kent.sch.uk
Many thanks.

For some reason I suddenly thought of Brian Henn this morning and was moved to Google his name which led me to this site! Unfortunately the email link for Brian in the news area no longer works. Working in the IT industry designing and building Enterprise Web Applications (hey! a tech savy old guy!!). Girls OCC Easter Hockey - Cora Goddard KC'99-'01

Hi I am organising the girls OCC Easter Hockey Festival at Polo Farm this year and am trying to find a few more players. Does anyone have the contact details for Fran Cuomo or Jasmine who left KC in 2000? Or if anyone else interested just let me know. I have a mixture of a team so far, some current pupils and well as old girls. Usually loads of fun so get in touch. Cora. (coragoddard_24@hotmail.com)

Alan Charlesworth KC'52-'93 (15/08/05)

I have just heard that Alan passed away in hospital yesterday, 14th August. Alan has been involved with Kent College for very many years on the staff and an active member of the Old Canterburians, including being President of the Club. Our thoughts are with Audrey and all the family.

Alan's funeral will be held on Wednesday 31st August at 2pm in St Dunstan's Church, Canterbury, all who knew Alan well are welcome. There will be a private cremation afterwards in Barham. His family has requested for family flowers only, donations can be made to the Home Farm Trust - 0117 930 2600.

Below: Alan Charlesworth (centre) with Paul Cox and Alan Frost at the November 2004 Reunion at Kent College.

Fraser James (17/8/05)

Mr Charlesworth was a wonderful teacher, and his lessons are with me to this day. I will never forget his cautionary tale about electricity in which, sorting through the burnt out ruins of a Nissan hut to determine the cause of the fire, he found that a fuse had been replaced by a six inch nail. Or the time that he caught a bunch of us sixth formers playing 'Black Bitch' in Guilford during a 'Study period' just before A-Levels. He drew himself up in preparation for serious chastisement - then sighed wryly -" They are your A-levels" he said, turned on his heel and walked away.
An inspired and inspirational man.
Bless him
Fraser

Joe Robson

This summer Mr Joe Robson retires after 25 years distinguished service to the school.  If any Old Canterburian would like to contribute towards a retirement present for him, please send a cheque, payable to Kent College, to Mr Alan Frost at the school.

Thank you.

Class of '85 Reunion

Giles Surman KC'80-'85

Dear All,

Reunion for those of us who left KC in/about 1985? 2005 marks 20 years since those of us who finished at KC in 1985 departed; that is my calculation- though I never was much good at maths. 20 years since I, (& many others I'm sure), darkened the doors of KC. Time to re-visit?

If interested, the best idea (in my view) is for those of us who left in or about 1985 & are interested in meeting up, to attend the annual OC's reunion which usually takes place at the school in November. At the time of writing no date has been set for this year's (2005) event. Visit the OC's web site for the date & booking details.

If those of us who are overseas (including Mark Williamson, Eric Djamson, Charles Chan & I'm sure quite a few others) are able to travel to Canterbury for our pilgrimage then such a journey would involve possibly more than one night in town & thus some 'refreshment' at The Three Tuns, The Seven Stars...and other places who's names escape me becasue of course as we were not permitted to go there... er, we didn't. I mention this only in order that those who may be travelling long distances might be encouraged (some of course may be put off) by the prosepct of perhaps not just one but two evenings with old friends. If you left in or about 1985, are interested in meeting up, then sign up for this year's OC's reunion. All being well I shall see you then, &/or in the bar the night before. (gsurman@netvigator.com)

Happy New Year.

Hello Everyone! I haven't written on this site before but i've had a sudden wave of nostalgia and started browsing the KC website. I left KC in 2000 and haven't been very good at keeping in touch with everyone but i would be pleased to hear from anyone who knows me. After KC i went to Birmingham Uni and got a BSc (Hons) Economics last summer. I was then successfully recruited onto the Lloyds TSB Registrars graduate programme so i'm busy learning about the business. I'm currently based in London (just by Cannon Street) if anyone is around there...would be great to hear from you. karenkinzett@yahoo.co.uk

Vivien Ma KC'92-'96 (20/7/04)

Hi all - for those who vaguely remember me, I am now working as a qualified auditor/accountant in Central London so if you need someone to do your tax return then let me know! My main reason for visiting the website is to ask for a little help: I have lost contact with our maths teacher Mr Richard Diamond for the last three years and would love to get in touch again. Does anyone have his contact details? My letters sent to his Kent address have all gone unanswered (ok, maybe that was a hint)... Anyhow thank you in advance! Good luck to you all! vivien_ma@hotmail.com

Hi!

I am currently finishing my fashion course at Manchester Metropolitan university. I am very excited about presenting my final collection at the London graduate fashion show on the 8th of June. I am still uncertain about the future, I am hesitating between doing an MA at Nottingham Trent, in order to specialize in lingerie, or staying in Manchester and try to find a job in the fashion industry as a designer, in order to gain some experience. In a few years, I am hoping to have my own brand. (shirley_p_moody2000@yahoo.co.uk)

Victor Allen KC'38-'43 (29/3/04)

As a dinosaur among OCC members and an ex-patriate at that, I am very much out of touch with my generation at KC. I really should like news of any of my contemporaries (or their email addresses. Some names which come to mind are Belsey, Stonham (?Stoneham), Friday, Ware, Gray (?Grey), Foster, Spanton, Browne and almost anyone else who was at Truro before 1943. Since we used only surnames and nicknames in those days I cannot remember first names or initials. (vicallen@victoria.tc.ca)

Robert Ryn KC'60-'67 (21/03/04)

This is my first visit to the site which was discovered by my teen-age daughter. As I read elsewhere it is a truth that as our years advance and short term memory loss more frequent, our thoughts turn to former days which are always in summer.

This is no more true than when reminiscing about school. Reading Neil Webber's letter brought back many memories (and he & I go further back than KC). I was also befriended by Pippen and often regret that I did not appreciate his teaching skills when at school. My Australian colleagues often rue my apparent pedantry which results from my love of our language inculcated by APLS.

The other masters he named, also invoked many other memories, including 'Lead-balls' Lockart (named for his custom of dropping florins one by one to count the balls when wicket umpire), Tank Hughes and his nail clippers and dotty Dotesio famed for his high speed reversing of the Scout troop land rover round the Quad. And for those who attended them, who could forget Bill anderson's Geography lessons?

I remember also the Rev May whose civilised, moderate and balanced RI lessons summed up all that was good about KC.

Well, I should be glad to hear from any old boys who remember me or those years, and those OCs in Australia. rryn@bigpond.com.au

John Clegg KC'60-'64 (21/03/04)

I came to KC in 1960 whilst my parents lived in Jamaica (WI) started as a boarding student in Class 3B. I finished Cambridge 'O' Levels in 1964 and then migrated to Perth - West Australia in 1964. I qualified in Perth as a Chartered Accountant worked with Arthur Young including as an audit partner until 1986. I now act as company director, business network and corporate consultant in Perth for Emerson Electric and other corporate clients. I have lost contact with most school colleagues from 40+ years ago having lived & worked in Aust & returned to UK only ever for fleeting visits. Interested to see if any school colleagues of the period are in touch via OCC and also any Australian contacts. I am married with 3 grown up children all working in Australia. john360@westnet.com.au

Canon Chan KC'91-'98 (19/3/04)

The Old Canterburian News brought me familiar faces from the past and through which happy memories followed. I saw Liz, Anisa (who was born on the same day as I), Claudia, Charlotte, Rebeca, Sarah, and Jo on the front page where the familiar KC hockey field was their background, a photograph taken at the Nov reunion. I am studying my final year in Medicine in Hong Kong and though it has been more than six years since I left KC, I can still picture every corner of the school vividly in my mind. The pool table in Milton, table tennis table in Guilford, the tennis pitches, rugby field, dining hall, the sportshall and everything that was that. I must plan to visit KC again and hopefully joint the next reunion after I have graduated from Medical school. Take care, and best wishes for all of you. noricans@yahoo.com.hk

Nabeel Khan KC'89-'91 (4/12/03)

I was really amazed and very delighted to see the OCC website, which I think is an amazing idea for keeping old friends in touch. If anything I feel that life has moved on and in spite of not being as young as we were in KC, our thoughts and feelings can be. I would love to stay in contact with anyone who remembers me from the college. Four years ago I bumped into Chris Osakwi in a London Club! And on another occasion I bumped into Javid Rahman in High Street Kensington. Since I left the college I moved on to Imperial College where I completed my BEng in Civil Engineering and then MSc in Transportation in 1995. I have been working as a Transport Planner in London in a company called Halcrow but mainly on overseas projects. Countries I have worked in to date include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hungary, Portugal, Yemen, Qatar and now I am, and have been in Dubai for the past two years. Unlike most of you not married yet and no kids! Would love to hear any news from Colin Feesey, Ashok Paul, Jimmy Khwoaja, Kofi, Chin Yamada, Eric Law etc. Was pleased to hear that Rehan, Reem and Heather are doing well.

Love to all and keep in touch

Would you believe Andy Eastwood, he lives up the North Sunshine Coast in Queensland which is only 100kms away from me, believe me in Australia that is like your next door neighbour. We intend to catch up with each other soon , not bad considering we left KC back in 1972 . Anybody else live in Oz? If so let's get the OCC going Down Under.(david.harper@bigpond.com)

Murray Poole-Connor KC'51-'55 (23/9/03)

I received the following letter from Murray regarding Stanley John who was both OCC Secretary from 1951 to 1960 and our President from 1962 to 1965 (Thanks to Alan Castle for the dates!) As previously published Stanley died in February this year.

Dear Duncan,

Although I seldom visit any longer I always welcome the receipt of the annual OCC Newsletter but was particularly saddened this time around to learn of the demise of Stanley John.

Stanley was a wonderful chap, a stalwart of the Club with an amazing ability to put a new member immediately at ease - and we must remember that many of us left aged only 16 in those days and found early OCC membership somewhat overbearing.

It occurs to me, however, that you might be interested in this anecdote concerning Stanley.

As you will see from members listing, I was one of those 16 year olds to leave after the ordinary level examinations in order to take up articles to become a Chartered Accountant. A short while later our then Head Master, Herbert Prickett, announced his retirement so the Club decided to promote a specific retirement fund for him from past pupils.

Believe it or not, in those days there were few Accountants in society at large so yours truly, all of 17 or 18, was considered to be the right person to manage this fund.

A huge sum, by the standards of those days, in excess of £1,000 was raised by the OCs and since I was then being paid about £3 per week it represented over 6 years salary in my eyes!

Stanley was then the Manager of the antique furniture department at Harrods and arranged that I should purchase silverware from the store, further obtaining his 33.3% staff discount. So when this youngster presented a cheque for these 'Crown Jewels' I was taken down to the Banking Hall for vetting and clearance and had to stand there, with no little trepidation, while a dress coated attendant took my cheque behind the scenes.

Shortly, however, a voice boomed out - 'Stanley John! Stanley John! - anyone with his support is good for his money!'.

He was indeed a great character and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Yours

Murray Poole-Connor

Hardly anyone from the Norfolk years of KC seems to make contact on this site..are we all hiding some ghastly secret? I have many memories..all the good ones concern my friends from that era. I have been a musician for as long as I can remember after leaving KC. Toured the world and settled in Queensland, Australia in the 80s. Ended up with 2 daughters and a stepdaughter, horses, cats and dogs. Went back to KC and VH in 2002, and everything looks so different to the 60s....positively human. (andyeastwood@ozemail.com.au)

Simon Hughes KC'76-'84 (15/9/03)

Blimey, its been almost 20 years since Chris Wright was running Milton House (now defunct I notice). I can't quite believe that - I still read Viz for god's sake.

Quick potted history (nothing too exotic) left KC to move to Chester with parents where I've lived and worked ever since. Via a couple of mickey mouse jobs, ended up at Marks & Spencer Financial Services and became a Marketing Analyst. Later through Bank of Scotland which later became HBOS, became Head of CRM Analysis & Modelling. Just left to work for a software company SAS based in Manchester but still living in Chester. Married for 8 years with 2 boys, Harry aged 6 and George aged 3. Couldn't be happier.

Must be a class of '84 beer opportunity looming? Hi to anyone who remember's me. (hughes.simon@btinternet.com)

Jeremy Jeffrey KC'58-'66 (17/12/02)

Very late coming to the OCC website - sorry!! Must join the OCs.

Left school at 16 and joined the Merchant Navy for a couple of years, but since 1968 I have worked as a nurse in the field of mental handicap. Wouldn't consider doing anything else!

My memory of school has faded over the years, but I remember with fondness the days in V.H. chasing butterflies and mounting them. Was that Mr Rattenbury's passion? In KC under Mr Norfolk, I remember being more interested in the sport than in the academics! I used to hate the hockey but love the cricket. I am still playing both - even at my advanced age. Anyone remember Dave Thompson (Thommo)? If anyone does, please let me know. I remember a lot of time spent in detention whilst the films were being shown on a Saturday night!! I also remember having to wear the boaters down to the town and having the mickey taken out us by the "village kids!" Would be great to hear from anyone who might remember me from those heady days of the 60s! (jeremy_jeffrey@hotmail.com)

Glad to hear many old school friends are doing well. I am interested in any news of Jason Gibbons, Shan Chee Lee and Michael Hall. Would like to hear from those of you who knew me. OCC Annual Reunion 9th November 2002.

The new format of the reunion proved itself successful on Saturday evening when nearly 90 ex-pupils and guests visited Kent College to discover all that had changed since they were last there and to catch up with their old school friends. The day started with a chance to watch the Girls Hockey teams and the Boys Rugby teams play against Cranbrook school. This was followed by a reception in the old school library and lunch. During the afternoon tea was supplied in the old art block, which is now the school shop. The OCC 100 Club was drawn during tea with one of the top prizes of £100 going to Duncan Castle KC'77-'84. There was another reception prior to dinner in the dining hall in the evening - and the evening was finished at the bar in the Staff Common Room(!). I'm sure there will be more reported in the Newsletter in January but special thanks must go to Sue Barnard for organising everything on our behalf. Anne Charlesworth and Katie Holland managed to gather together a dozen or so of their contemporaries who left KC 20 and 10 years ago respectively - something we would like more people to do in the future!

Here are a few pictures from the evening:

Micheal Dowling KC'58-'60 (25/10/02)

Woe is me! I let my membership of OCC lapse - when it was still black and white TV!

I left KC December 1960 and started with a firm of Lloyd's brokers in January 1961. I remained in the insurance business until 1993 when redundancy was the watch-word and, yes, it watched me! I'm now a civil servant - an oximoron - neither civil nor a servant -working for the DWP. I've 2 daughters , one at Warwick University reading History of Art, the other at Birmingham Uni reading Drama and English.

Do contact me if you wish, it's always a treat to find out just what is happening. Yours aye! Mike Dowling (dowlingpapoose@aol.com)

Neil Webber KC'61-'66 (20/10/02)

I was a late recruit to the OCC, having been persuaded to join by APL Slater a year or so before his death. After a chance meeting we kept in touch and became good friends. We found great delight in reflecting on my moderate academic achievements at KC, especially in English, and my later appointment as Editorial Training Manager with the Kent Messenger Group, a role that involved teaching young journalists grammar, punctuation, spelling and story construction. Who would have thought it?

I have to say the longer I have been away from KC, the sweeter the memories seem to become. It was great to reminisce with Pippin (APLS). Some of you who were at KC in the mid-60s may recall that football was all I was interested - revision? no thanks - and I formed an unofficial school team that played a number of other schools in the area. We beat St Edmund's 1-0, Archbishop's 4-2 and drew 3-3 with the then all-conquering Simon Langton School (Boys).

Among the KC players were Roger Cawley, my best mate who was outstanding in any sport he turned his hand to and went on to marry tennis star Evonne Goolagong, Paul Mutter, John Allworthy, Michael Anderson, Jumbo Jenkins, Phil Wilson, Myles or Miles Mellor, Jonathan Cutter, Chris Gray and even, if my memory serves me right, John Redwood.

My greatest achievement, though, was returning after two weeks' suspension from school for being caught smoking in a city centre cafe by a prefect called Hussein - I managed to evade the school police at the stile - and being told I was to represent White House in the school mile. I cherish the picture that appeared in the local newspaper showing me beating the school champion, a guy called Mitchell, by a hair's breadth.

I still meet some old boys from around my time who have remained local and every so often I've bumped into legendary characters from the teaching staff, like Don Sutherland, Phil Chalcraft, Douglas White (six bamboo cane marks on my backside lasted for weeks!), Gordon Rodway (Latin, yuk!) and Alan Charlesworth - and I used to see Keith Carter riding around town on a motorbike.

After leaving KC in 1966 with 6 GCE O levels the highest accolade - "we can't teach him any more" - I joined the now-defunct Kentish Observer newspaper before eventually launching a 25-year career with the Kent Messenger Group, as Kentish Gazette sports editor, KM Group sports editor and production editor before, four years ago, being asked to set up an editorial training department.

I've long since given up football but enjoy golf and working out at the gym and for many years have been a vice-president of Canterbury Hockey Club.

I also run a private press, photography and PR business and am editor of a golf holiday magazine, Going For Golf, which circulates to all the golf clubs in the UK.

I would love to hear from anyone who received six of the best from Doug "this is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you" White or who has memories to share from the super Sixties. (kentmedia@tesco.net)

I left KC when my parents emmigrated to Canada, and I spent all my working life there - 30 years in the TV business as a sound recording engineer. 25 years with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and 5 years freelance. Worked on everything from Grand Opera to Olympics to Jim Henson's "Fraggle Rock" Built boats in my spare time and upon retirement set sail in the latest, a 40 footer. Lived aboard for 6 years, mainly in the Bahamas, but made 3 Atlantic crossings (one singlehanded) and I am now living in the Azores, helping my wife with her graphic-design business and converting an old stone barn into a modern house.

I would love to hear from any of the people I went to school with. (Lapisazul@netc.pt)

Ex-Pupils Cross Country Fixture, Wimbledon Common, 14th December

Fellow runners,
As last year, I will enter a team for the Old Boys Cross Country Fixture on Wimbledon Common, 14th December, since it costs nothing. They accept teams of any size (even one person), age or sex. We only need 3 people to make up a full Vets team or 4 for a senior team. I can supply all the details if you wish and it would help the organisers if we send in a provisional entry by early December.

Regards

Peter Kennedy (pkennedy@datchet.plus.com)

If there is interest from both the school and other OCC's I am willing to try and get an OCC vs School fixture but no luck to date.

Christiern (Gunnar) Albertson KC'47-'49 (13/9/02)

I am already listed under my full name, Christiern, but I realize that this can be misleading, for I was known at KC by my middle name, Gunnar.

Upon leaving KC, I returned to Copenhagen and then elementary school in NewYork (1942-44) having slowed down my education, was enrolled in a school for commercial art. While working as an artist, I heard a Bessie Smith recording and got hooked on jazz and blues, which is what I have dedicated my life to.

I moved to New York (via 3 years in Iceland) in 1957. Here I worked as a jazz disc jockey, general manager of a radio station (WBAI), record producer and writer. My last job brought me back to the UK every other month, coordinating BBC radio programs for the U.S. market. I worked on Round the Horne and many other programs that reflected the early 1960s. Regret not having taken a trip to Canterbury--guess old age had to set in before that urge came upon me.

As a record producer, I (as Chris Albertson) have done well (2 Grammys, 4 nominations) and a biography of Bessie Smith, which was published in the U.S. and U.K. in 1972 is about to re-emerge here and there in an expanded, greatly revised form.

As someone here pointed out, I guess my generation of KC alumni is less apt to be wired for the Internet, but I sure would like to make contact with anyone who recalls attending post-war KC (under Mr. Prickett) with an Icelandic boy who lived in Denmark. I was in the remove class, Mr. Compton was our French master, and my classmates included the Baker brothers, Halliday, Hertzberg, Stafford, a Czech boy and a Pole (KC was quite international in those days).

Sorry to have been so long-winded--I should have given details in my first post. (calbertson@nyc.rr.com)

Derek Cornish KC'52-'58 (21/8/02)

David Harper KC'66-'72 (18/8/02)

Well after cruising the OCC Keep in Touch I discover that there aren't many of our era ('66 -'72) that seem to use the site. Probably the new technology is too foreign to our generation. It was a trip down memory lane to see such a fabulous site on the internet. When you live 'Down Under', in Australia, our second home KC seems to be a million miles away. It was great to find some familiar names on the site. If anybody has contact details for Mark Riley or Wynford Matthews or in fact anybody in the encumbent years please contact me on david.harper@bigpond.com.

Any OCC members planning a visit to Brisbane, Australia please feel free to drop me an email - it would be wonderful to catch up. (david.harper@bigpond.com)

Jon Follenfant KC'62-'66 (8/8/02)

Have enjoyed reviewing this site. Amazing to see names of people from so many years ago. After Kent College, I finished my "highschool" back on Bahrain. Returned to the U.S. and received a degree in Chemistry from University of Central Florida in 1978 and then on to Dental School in St. Louis graduating in 1883. Married my wife Bev during dental school and will be married 20 years in July 2002. Moved back to Florida and have stayed put since. Have two wonderful children Lindsay(16) and Christopher (12). Would love to hear from anyone from my class years. What a great forum to try to stay in touch. (wst85@aol.com)

Steve Cole KC'65-'75 (28/4/02)

Hi, to all at KC during those crazy 70's. I'm now living in Suffolk, with my darling wife Jo (must be 15 years now), and two children. Occasionally Tim Rickets, Mark Venning and Stu Pryke..... (COLES@HPUK.CO.UK)

It might amuse those who remember me whittering on about Canada in 3rd-form days to hear that we made it - eventually! 'We' being myself, wife, three small children and another due very soon, now living in the mountains around Clearwater in British Columbia. Writing GIS software supporting river-management for clients in the UK, and running a small cross-country ski business on the side, along with some B&B. Should be graduating in Computer Science come June, but will be staying in Cambridge as I have a job at a games company. Anna and Jonathan were well when I last heard from them. I suppose people won't be surprised to learn I'm involved in the Christian Union and in church, but I can imagine some astonishment at learning that I'm hoping to get some qualifications in Ballroom and Latin dancing.

Does anyone at KC from 1983 to 1985 remember a Greek Maths teacher by the name of Popadopolous. Does anyone during this period remember what happened to him. Did he go back to Greece?

I was also sad to read about the death of Chris Wright on the site. (fiyaz@fiyaz.freeserve.co.uk)

Roger Lewis KC'62-'67 (29/01/02)

I came across the OCC site when showing my sons the KC site and telling them of my school days at the top of the hill, under the water tower and under the regime's of Messrs Norfolk, Charlesworth, and White.

I have no contact these days with old boys, except the school photo of May 65 which hangs in my study.

I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who remembers me. In the school photo I am standing in the back row alongside Pete Smith, and I recall surnames (sad reflection of the times)of Shute, Collins, Sexton, Fuggle, Currey, and I also note John Redwood, my MP, standing just along from me. If anybody from our year is interested please e-mail me. Also, if anybody has details of anyone in our year please let me know. I already have several interested parties so don't miss out! Having stumbled across the OCC website I'm posting my contact details in the forlorn hope that one or two of my contemporaries will have mastered the black arts of the Internat and e-mail.

I've noticed references to over 50's hockey and if there are others of my vintage still playing it would be interesting to make contact. I wonder if anyone else remembers going to hockey training on the pier at Herne Bay (or was it Whitstable?) when it was too wet or frosty to use the grass pitch at school? Strange, the things that suddenly come to mind.

Congratulations to the webmaster on an excellent site. (paul.a.king@bt.com)

Emma D'Almeida KC'84-'91 (09/01/02)

Hello all. After leaving KC I had three fantastic years studying English and History of Art at Oxford Brookes University. I then moved to London where I've been ever since working in PR for a number of different publishers. About eight months ago I moved over to the BBC working as a publicist promoting factual television programmes - everything from serious documentaries to Delia Smith and Children in Need! I'm living in Balham with my boyfriend who is an architect and keep in close contact with Michelle Griffiths who is my partner in crime for many drunken nights out! She is doing very well for herself working as a statistician in Hertfordshire and she has a very flash sports car! (stan.em@virgin.net)

Philip Miles KC'79-'86 (07/01/02)

Just started looking back at my time at school. Not kept in touch much other than very occasionally with Paul Skipworth who was married 2 years ago. Has been in Hong Kong now back I think.

Would welcome an email from anyone I used to know. (phil@alchemy-uk.com)

Happy New Year to you. For information for the OC's website I thought that you might like to know that in the New Years Honours and Awards Ian Jennings was awarded an MBE. He is currently a WO1 in the Army Physical Training Corps. He was a couple of years below me at KC I think he was probably there 1973 - 1978 or therabouts. John Powell

John Foster KC'39-'44 (04/01/02)

After having spent most of my working life on the Continent, I have for the past few years moved back to the UK and am enjoying life in Oxford. I suppose my contemporaries are rather thin on the ground however would be delighted to hear from any one who knew me. (J.and.M.Foster.Oxford@virgin net)

Caroline Dodge (Morgan) KC'75-'82 (02/01/02)

Just to advise anyone that's interested, my preferred email address is now caroline.dodge@btinternet.com. Since I added my details, my personal circumstances have now changed and I finally managed to escape from BT by taking release just before Xmas. Not only has my sanity been restored and my blood pressure reduced tenfold but I've always had a secret desire to be a kept woman! I've just got to find a sugar daddy now (only joking, Mark!)

Robert Thomas KC'50-'57 (31/12/01)

With the demise of Excite.com, along with many others, my e-mail address has changed!! (bobma21@attbi.com)

Tony Ridsdale KC'81-'88 (17/12/01)

The Club has just received the following sad news:

Dear Friends

It is with much sadness that we have to tell you of the sudden death of our oldest son Tony on 11th December 2001, aged 31 years. We are still in a state of deep shock at his sudden and unforeseen death. As far as we can recall, he hardly had any illness in his life. The funeral is at Barham Crematorium, Canterbury on Friday 21st December at midday.

Sincerely

Jill & Brian Ridsdale

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Hi to everyone who reads this. I am now living in Liverpool working for Rolls-Royce Power Engineering. I graduated from Liverpool University in 2001 and started work straight away. I also got married in 2000 and went to the Philippines with my wife for 5 weeks. I have been in touch with a few people since I left KC and a lot of them came to the wedding. I am very interested to hear how everyone is getting on, both ex-pupils and staff who are still around from those days, so if anyone wants to get in touch it would be good to hear from you. (simon.purves@rolls-royce.com)

Nigel Collins KC'67-'77 (11/12/01)

Age is getting to me and I now have a perverse interest in what became of us all. After experimenting with farming, social work, time share and the forces, i've spent most of my working life in marketing - sailing dinghies, zoo parks and visitor attractions to name the most interesting areas I've worked in. Travelled alot through work but strangely enough am now living by the sea in tankerton just up the road from KC. Married with 2 girls and happy with my lot.

Am in touch with Dick Peasley, Clive Tricker and NAT Williams - would love to hear from any of the old gang so give it a go!!! (n.collins@academychildcare.co.uk)

Catriona Clifton (Barry) KC'75-'82 (8/12/01)

Funny reading this site and coming across names who I haven't thought about for 20 years and remembering most of them as irresponsible juveniles who are now SO grown up! I'm afraid I've retained my juvenile sense of humour and indeed behaviour.

Grown up bit = married to lovely Gillie for 13 years, 3 kids, Laura 10, Charlie 8, Alice 5. Living in village ( Weald ) near Sevenoaks and working near Kingston Surrey as Director of Insurance Broking/Risk Management firm.

Juvenile bit = I can't take anything seriously, need to laugh hysterically at least once a day and sport continues to play too much of an important part of my life, although mainly from an armchair these days or supporting ( too vocally, Charlie's sports - Rugby, Football, cricket etc ).

Still in touch from time to time with Toby Broom, Nick Faulkner, Dave Eades, Ann Charlesworth ( Watters ), Malcolm Hoskins.

Is it really 20 years....... (jon@jvirgo.freeserve.co.uk)

Guy Hargreaves KC'82-'89 (27/10/01)

I've just started to try and get back in touch with old school friends, sparked by various websites such as this one.

I've briefly made contact with Julius Gwyer and am looking forward to recontacting Andy Bounds and Matthew Butcher, who seams to still know loads of people.

I'm based in London and have since leaving KC either been sponsored or worked for the Ministry of Defence. I lost touch with most people whilst I was at Bath Uni doing Aeronautical Engineering.

On the social side I've been married for a couple of years to Sophie, no kids. (guy_hargreaves@hotmail.com)

Ex-Pupils Cross Country Fixture, Wimbledon Common, 8th December (16/10/01)

Fellow runners,

As last year, I will enter a team for the Old Boys Cross Country Fixture on Wimbledon Common, 8th December, since it costs nothing. They accept teams of any size (even one person), age or sex, but I am little more hopeful this year as my brother is interested. We only need 3 people to make up a full Vets team or 4 for a senior team. I can supply all the details if you wish and it would help the organisers if we send in a provisional entry by early December.

Regards

Andy Gardiner KC'77-'82 (04/10/01)

For the past few years I have wondered what came of pupils in my year at KC ,if you would like to drop me a line then I can put my curiosity to rest.

To put the bare bones on my past 19 years: I`ve been married for the past eleven years, have three children, two boys and a girl ages 10, 8, 6 all have the brains and looks of their mother.

We lived in Canterbury until about six years ago and now live in Merseyside. I met my wife in Barnsley and after six weeks took her to Paris where I proposed and we`ve been together for thirteen years. I`ve worked for two companies over the past 16 years in the capacity of senior management. Our spare time is taken up by visiting different parts of the world and being a taxi service to the childrens sporting events. I look foreward to any replies. Andy. (andrewgardiner@lineone.net)

Guy Pocock KC'72-'76 (15/09/01)

I never thought that I would ever do this, that is to say try and make contact again with former friends from my days at KC! I suspect that it has got something to do with getting older and feeling the need to re-acquaint myself with old 'chums'............? So here goes.

After leaving KC in 1976 I moved 'up north'. Shortly after that returned to work in London as a police officer. After a year I moved back to the Lake District in Cumbria where I still live with my wife of twenty years, Fliss. We have two children James who is eighteen years and is reading Information Systems at Newcastle Uni. and Harriet who is sixteen. I am currently employed by the Home Office (National Police Training) teaching criminal law. I studied at Portsmouth Uni and attained a BSc Degree and am now in the final year of a post grad. M.Ed. We own a restaraunt in Kendal and also small retail business.

I keep in contact with Neil (baboon!) Davidson and through him hear occasionally about Nick Land and Chris Biggs. It would be great to hear from any other people who were at KC at the same time. I will probably be remembered most as one of the five Pococks who went to KC. Indeed, I believe Stephen Pocock (one of my cousins children) is working at the school at this time. If you still don't remember me then try this one. I was the record holder for the the most detention awarded in one term (spring 1975), and managed to miss at least the first half-hour of every Saturday night film that used to be shown in the gym!!

The only other person from KC whom I've bumped into was Chris Fairbank (well known film and TV actor). I saw him playing Horatio in Hamlet with Alan Rickman as the lead. I did meet him after the show for a chat.

Plase feel free to drop me a line if you remember me. (G.pocock@btinternet.com)

John Powell KC'71-'78 (10/09/01)

As predicted in the last OCC web site update, I have moved back to Germany, land of the Deutch Mark for not much longer.

Currently though I am temporarily deployed on exercise in the Oman from September to November. Based in the Dhofar area we are in a region known as the 'Negd' or 'Nothing'. A particularly apt description at 40 degrees plus with an occasionial camel to keep you company.

I am reminded when I view the scenery of many of Mr Sweet's geography lessons. If he reads this I have now seen at first hand what 'exfoliation or spalling' can really do. (Why is it that his lessons stick so clearly in both my and Mark Sinclair's memories). (jrj_powell@hotmail.com)

Hi to everyone who will know, me. Not so many familiar faces on the web site, but my year were always quite slack...including me (for all the economic, geography and maths teachers who may read this!) I'm currently in New Zealand, working hard for an export company...nothing dodgy honest! Have got a pretty good life over hear at the moment living in a huge house and met a lovely Kiwi girl about seven months ago. For those who know me I'm still playing hockey (for a team called Summerville playing Premier 2 grade which isn't too bad) and also playing cricket for Grafton Slappers, which is a good laugh! Well has anyone any news etc... that I'd be interested in, I'm not planning on returning to England at present for a while, its too expensive! Look forward to hearing from anyone in my year or there abouts with their news. Take Care people Jim. (jamesmcrae@statusexports.co.nz)

Peter Absolon KC'56-'66 (12/08/01)

Got hooked on computers while gaining my engineering degree.

Spent 24 years working for IBM as a software developer, maintainer, author, tester etc, moving later into process and QA at Hursley near Winchester. Was then downsized.

Worked for DERA(Defence Evaluation and Research Agency) at Farnborough for seven years, becoming manager of the Business Management System for the organisation.

Have now taken "early retirement" to help run a village inn in Pembrokeshire. Actually "working" longer hours than ever before.

The ad should probably go in the business links section, but if anyone is interested in staying in Pembrokeshire, we do B&B (19 pounds per person per night, 17 to OCC members), and we have two restaurant areas, one offering traditional bar food, the other local fish specialities. A sea view is available from the family room. Further information is on the simplepubs website www.simplepubs.co.uk, search on Taberna. Alternatively, the ever memorable http://194.205.121.4/servlet/SIMSearch?pubid=609 will find us directly. It is a lovely location for a break at any time of the year.

May think of doing a spot of process/quality consultancy once the big list of outstanding Taberna jobs is completed. (taberna@inn01.freeserve.co.uk)

Tamsin Rampall KC'89-'96 (12/8/01)

I have written on this site once before but I thought I'd write again with what I've been upto. Good to see so many people are writing with their news but it would be good if some of my year would write!!

Well I have finished university and am now officially a primary school teacher!! I can't believe it!! I've decided to dela getting a job for a year and go travelling around the world but on my way I'm going to work in an orphanage in India and various primary schools around the world.

Keep writing and anyone who knows me who wants to get incontact then please mail me trampall@hotmail.com Hello to Mr and Mrs Halse, Mrs Gray and any other teachers who knows me.

Penny Walsh (Tricker) KC'78-'79 (6/8/01)

Just received details on this web-site from big brother Clive, had a look and saw lots of familiar names - which brought back some good memories of my brief time at KC.

I have two great boys of 12 and 9 who are almost as tall as me - anyone who knows both Clive and I knows that he inherited ALL the growing genes in our family. I work in sales and business development for an electronics manufacturer and spend most of my free time in the Sussex countryside with my sons and a variety of animals. I saw Liz Chubb's share but didn't see an email address for her - please forward my details if you're in contact with her.(penny.walsh@eksi.co.uk)

Andy Cameron KC'75-'82 (6/8/01)

OK, so I moved to sunny (?) Yorkshire so if there is anyone out there in the Sheffield/Leeds area, do let me know. I am still busy with IBM and the occasional fishing trip.......! (roo.cameron@bigfoot.com)

Neil Bliss KC'41-'51 (30/7/01)

In spite of having lived within 100 km of each other for some years it was only recently that Neil Bliss (41-51) and Robin Edwardes (43-49),both now retired, managed to meet, together with respective wives, for a lunch in Ottawa.

Talk naturally turned to post-war athletics and the many people, both staff and boys who were involved in the advancement of athletics at KC at the time.

A year or so ago Robin was asked to review a short draft history, apparently from a compilation of KC sporting activities, dealing with athletics. Can anyone elucidate this publication? Is there a history of KC sporting activities being prepared?

Robert Thomas KC'50-'57 (30/7/01)

After leaving KC in 1957 I got my undergraduate degree at Queen Mary College, London University, then on to Cornell University in New York and then back to Imperial College, London.

I came over to the States in 1965 and retired a year ago from the position of Chief Engineer, Structures for Boeing in Seattle. I now spend my time travelling, landscaping three acres of wilderness and watching my 5 grandchildren grow. Retirement is a state to be relished and my wife and I are enjoying every minute of it. (bobma21@home.com)

Adrian Tute KC'74-'81 (26/7/01)

For those of you out there who knew me and after all these years, remember who I am here is a peephole view of the last 20years of my life.

After graduating from Imperial College I did the predictable thing and got a job - the problem was, after 3 years of discovering London life, Reading plainly wasn't my cup of tea and I soon realised, even before I had recovered fully from the dysentry I picked up after 3 months in India, that I needed an excuse to get back to London. So after about 9 months at Racal, I went back to academia to do a Masters. The choice of communications engineering, thanks to a randomly placed pin in the shortlist I had made, was to play a major role in determining my life up to now.

After graduating again,I decided that I fancied living abroad for a few years, having visited many countries as a traveller during my college years (India, China, The States, Burma, Thailand, Egypt, etc) but in the limited summer hols, only being able to skim the surface of what those countries and their peoples were really about. I decided on Japan and did a mailshot to Japanese companies in the UK basically saying, "Here is my c.v. Do you have any jobs in Japan?" To cut a long story short, 1year later (after working in Piza Hut and a Japanese SW house in London), I was on a plane to Osaka for what I thought would be a couple of years. . . After more than 7 years, marrying, being scared sh*tless in Kobe during the big earthquake and giving birth to a few GSM phones for Mitsubishi (still haven't fathered anything Human yet), we (my Korean wife, Yoshie, in hand) escape back to Europe - France.

After a couple of years in France, I leave Mitsubishi and join VLSI in Singapore. After what was like a 3 year working holiday there (Singapore must be the easiest place to live) and just before VLSI went down the toilet (bought by Philips), we moved back to Japan,Tokyo this time. And that is where we are now. I am working for a small company from Finland that makes mobile phones as a SW Programme Manager.

Mum and Dad still live in Highfield Close, and so Guildford House is still the dominating view from the bedroom window when I go home.

Get in touch if you know me, maybe we can have a beer next time I'm back. After 14 years out of England, I always welcome the chance to go to a pub for a real Pint.

Adrian Tute (tute@co.xdsl.co.jp)

Michael Griffin KC'66-'73 (24/7/01)

I noted with some sadness the death of Chris Wright, my ex-housemaster. I had seen him several times since leaving KC and I can assure everyone that he remembered all who had been in Milton House.

I am a Management Consultant now and spend my time travelling around Europe and the US making a nuisance of myself. I had considered sending my daughter Anna to KC but decided to stay put in Surrey. I recognise a few names having scanned this site. Frank Weaver has emerged from darkest Africa, Paul Venning lives just down the road. Glad to see some fellow aviating persons.

Anyone remember Chris Wilcockson? I bumped into him a while back at Gatwick. Steve Flanders lives in Canterbury and he and I have been known to go flying together, despite having had a bad accident on the way back from France once. Andy Flanders is doing something dot commish in Miami. Always pleased to hear from the the loud crowd.(mjgconsulting@aol.com)

Sofia Fay (Worede) KC'77-'84 (24/7/01)

Currently living in the Turks And Caicos Islands having left the UK in 1996 to live in The British Virgin Islands. I'm married and recently gave birth to our third child (a girl to follow and try and refine our 2 boys aged 7 and 5)I graduated from Trent University Nottingham in 1987 with a law degree but ended up working in Marketing (who didn't?). I lost contact with Tacita Dean, Sarah Hollett, Lizanne, Sam and Lorel after we had a farewell supper in 1986 and vowed to stay in touch. I still communicate with Rachel Rutter (now Bridgeford). If anyone has details on how to get hold of any of these lovelies, please let me know. I would be thrilled to hear from pals of those days spent being indignant teenagers, but be warned, I am not a reliable correspondant! Best wishes x Sofia (sofia@thefays.net)

Giles Surman KC'80-'85 (11/7/01)

The current HM of KC Ed Halse visited Hong Kong at the end of May. It was good to meet him and his wife, and those of us OC's who came together to meet him for dinner one Friday evening in the depths of Kowloon it was a fun evening. Of course it was interesting to hear about who was still at the school and great to be told that the place is thriving.

We would like to hear from OC's who are resident in HK as Charles Chan thought we should perhaps start a local branch...(he will probably not believe it when he finally reads that he has been voluntered to run the branch; but as his computer is out of service at present he won't know until it's too late).

Suffice it to say that the other OC's here and I were very pleased to have the HM here and look forward to his next visit.

For those of you who recall Peter Surman (KC 1940's-1951) he sends his best wishes. Yes he is still dispensing justice in Fiji despite all the local difficulties there. He hasn't managed to hook up to this site yet; but his e mail is : pacificventure@is.com.fj he would be delighted to hear from his old school friends. (surman@hotmail.com)

Luke Akehurst KC'83-'90 (3/7/01)

I missed the unofficial "class of 1990" KC reunion, hope to make the next one. After KC I studied Politics at Bristol Uni, then went on to do 2 years as a National Union of Students Convenor and finally a year as National Secretary of Labour Students.

I've carried on working in politics since - short stints at the BBC Political Research Unit and working for an MEP, full-time Agent for Frank Dobson MP in the '97 election, political adviser to Hackney Council Labour Group and now a political consultant for public affairs company GJW/BSMG, specialising in defence issues.

I was Labour parliamentary candidate for Aldershot, Hampshire in the general election on 7 June.

My brother, Sam (KC 1985-1992) has just completed a PhD in mechanical engineering at Bath Uni. (lakehurst@bsmg.com)
