T. DAVID “Sparks” SPENCER

David was educated at Dulwich and Cambridge and came to K.C. in 1938 to teach Classics.  A man of broad culture, he soon took in other school activities, notably in producing plays (of which the outstanding ‘Hamlet’ in 1948 must rank highest) and in the general musical education of the school, helping with both choir and orchestra.  In addition, he shared the Housemastership of Lower School with Freddy Fowler and coached junior rugby teams.  To all his pursuits he brought a special concern for the aesthetic development of pupils, to whom he became a friend.  He was remembered affectionately as both a ‘gentleman’ and a ‘gentle man’.

He was dogged by ill health and missed several terms of teaching, finally retiring in 1956, but showing his concern and interest in the school by his regular attendance thereafter at Old Canterburian reunion dinners.  He married Mrs Dorothy Stevens, widow of  ‘C.V.’, in 1973 and lived in rural contentment in Brabourne, near Ashford, until his death on September 29th 1983.
