RAYMOND  ‘ROY’  ALAN  DAY (1901-1985)

Born in 1901, Roy came to Kent College with a London University Science degree in 1924 to take charge of Physics.  His skilled and patient teaching gave the subject prestige and raised it to standards that have been maintained ever since.  His contributions to the day-to-day running of the school defy listing:- drawing up the timetable; starting and teaching woodwork and metalwork in the workshop; umpiring and refereeing all games; organising the lighting for plays; acting as Bursar after the war; advising on careers; Housemaster of Neville House, teacher of Navigation to the ATC at Truro; planning the Coulson Science block.  As well as being Senior Master for eight years, he was Acting Headmaster during Mr Prickett’s sabbatical in 1958.

It was, however, he personality that endeared him to staff and pupils alike.  His manner was gentle and courteous, and he was regarded as a fatherly figure who would listen patiently, advise wisely and never be ruffled.  He retired in 1963 and it was sad and, at the same time, most fitting that his death on June 28 1985 occurred a week after he had laid the foundation stone for the new Sports Centre.
