R  E  ELLINS

Ray Ellins came to Kent College from Preston Grammar School in September 1953.  He took over the position of Senior History Master following Sidney Haynes’ promotion to Queens College, Taunton and also became Housemaster at Milton House.

In addition to these tasks he coached hockey and cricket and made a significant contribution to the School Entertainments Committee.

He will be remembered for his versatility and critical intellect as well as for his quality teaching (of a subject which was not the most popular at the time).  He displayed a tolerance for others’ views and an engaging simplicity that enabled the most hesitant pupil to voice his opinions.

Ray and Peggy Ellins took a deep interest and showed genuine concern for the boys at Milton House, transforming it into a closely knit and harmonious unit.  They left KC for Bristol in 1963.  Ray Ellins died in 1999.
