GORDON RODWAY
Gordon
first came to KC in 1954 and was appointed as Head of Classics in 1957,
remaining in this post for 36 years. Before his time here Greek was not offered
and Latin was only taught to ‘O’ level. A generation of pupils would have
received a thorough grounding in these subjects; Gordon’s knowledge of and
passion for the classics were unparalleled. He relied on old-fashioned methods
of teaching: rote learning and direct questioning. Robust and amusing comments
were directed to pupils failing to give the correct answers!
In his earlier days at KC Gordon was an energetic rugby coach. Later he was involved with Careers and University admissions. Many pupils benefited from his wide knowledge and extensive contacts in further and higher education.
He was a keen golfer, organising coaching for pupils on Friday evenings. He was captain of Chestfield Golf Club, where tributes to him can be seen on the 1st tee and also in the clubhouse – the ‘Gordon Rodway Clock’.
