G W R ‘Geoff’ Brownscombe (1907-1949)

Geoff was born in 1907 and came, with his family, to Kent College in 1911. As the son of the Headmaster life could have proved difficult, but this was never the case. Like his father, he was possessed of a genial personality which won him countless friends, and he entered into the life of KC with tremendous enthusiasm. He became a Prefect, Corporal in the Cadet Corps and matriculated in 1923. He was awarded 1st XI Hockey Colours and 2nd XI Football Colours. He joined the Old Canterburian Club and became one of the first ‘Old Boy’ Presidents, an office he filled with considerable distinction. He was a fine after-dinner speaker and many will remember on particular humorous oration which had his audience convulsed.
He became a highly successful Chartered Accountant, having been President of the Chartered Accountant Students’ Society of London Debating Union in 1936-1937. Shortly after the war he married Alma Musgrove, the widow of a vicar killed on the Normandy beaches. In his spare time he pursued his enthusiasm for classic cars.
He had much to offer and KC and the Old Canterburian Club, together with his many friends were the poorer for his death at the early age of 42.
