F J G ‘FREDDY’ FOWLER
Freddy
was
born on July 19 in Tewkesbury and was educated at the Grammar School there. He
taught in the Bahamas before coming to Kent College in 1945.
He carried out all he undertook with utter devotion: Housemaster of Lower School from 1954; coaching junior rugger; teaching swimming and life saving; running the lively Farmers’ Club.
His wide reading and interest in history and geography were passed on in digestible form to lower school classes by way of meticulously drawn cyclostyled sheets. From his own pocket he provided most of Lower School’s elaborate model railway layout. In the holidays he introduced senior boys to climbing North Wales and winter sports in Switzerland.
He was friends with all, colleagues and pupils alike. They will recall his mischievously puckish face, wreathed in clouds of tobacco smoke, laughing at some joke or coughing from the inhaled tobacco that was to cause his death, in harness, on 19 May 1962.
