“C.V.” STEVENS (1907-1969)

CV was born a Cornishman on April 3rd 1907 and was educated at Truro School and Westminster College.  Earlier experiences included teaching every subject, including art and P.T. in a mixed class of 44 in Lancashire, five years at Culford School where he met Dorothy Elder whom he married in 1945, and two years at Hymer’s School, Hull.  He came to K.C. in 1947.

He entered A Level candidates in physics, chemistry, zoology, biology and botany, played two instruments in the school orchestra and promoted the Photographic Society.  He was sparing of words, kindly and sensitive but his dry wit at staff meetings punctured any bubbles of pomposity.  Two idiosyncracies will most vividly recall him: his imitation of a walking gown as he stalked, thus enveloped, to his chapel seat; and his wicked delight in ending his austere bible readings with an abruptness that could catch even the Headmaster off-guard.

He retired prematurely with ill health in 1967 and died on February 17th 1969.
