BRIAN HAYNES MA, LLB. 1949 – 2004.
Brian
and his twin brother Keith were the sons of Sidney Haynes, Senior History Master
at K.C. They came to Vernon Holme in 1948 and continued through to the sixth
form. Brian was a school prefect, played hockey for the school and later
represented the Old Canterburians at the Folkestone Hockey Festivals for several
years. At Cambridge he played for the Wanderers, the University 2nd
XI. He also played for Richmond.
Brian read law at St. John’s College, Cambridge, gaining a first and being awarded a scholarship for a LLB. He was also placed first in the country in his solicitors’ examination. He joined, and remained with, the London lawyers Church Adams Tatham and Co, rising to become senior partner in Reigate.
He maintained close links with K.C., becoming a governor in 1975 and continuing in this capacity until his death, one of the longest and most distinguished periods of office that included a term as chairman in the late 1980s. He brought to the position many valuable attributes. First, of course, was his great personal integrity and knowledge and affection for the school as an Old Canterburian. In addition, Brian contributed much from his professional expertise as a lawyer. Loyal support and wise counsel were always given willingly and thoughtfully. Misjudgements or inadequately researched recommendations were queried gently but perceptively. Always happy to give of his time, Brian contributed immeasurably to the good governance of K.C. for almost thirty years.
[Keith Haynes also maintained links with K.C., becoming the school’s medical officer from 1969 until his death in 1984].
