BASIL W BURGESS

Basil was at Kent College between 1922 and 1928. Among his several activities were his interest in the scouts and he was the school’s first King’s Scout. In 1928 he was awarded his soccer colours. His colleagues may remember him best however for his enthusiastic participation in playground hockey and soccer.
After the Second World War he became active in the Old Canterburian Club organising the hockey for a number of years. In 1964 he was elected President and in later years represented the ‘older generation’ on the Committee. Throughout his life he made a major contribution to hockey at all levels; he was a leading umpire, officiating in the Rome Olympic Games and behind the Iron Curtain.
Basis never enjoyed good health and over the years endured a series of operations with great fortitude. He died on 29 May 1984 – a sincere and dedicated friend of the Club and an inimitable personality. It is fitting that his name should be enrolled in this Memorial Book that he himself inaugurated.
